Founded in the early 17^th century, Gothenburg is the home to the largest port in the Scandinavian region. Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest city situated on the west cost, Göta älv river. Plan Your Trip For the International Film Festival

Who doesn’t love cinema on some core level? Started in 1979, the Göteborg International Film Festival is the largest festival of its kind in all of Scandinavia. It initially started with just 17 movies and about 3,000 visitors, but today the festival is held over the course of 10 days at the end of January and beginning of February. The average festival boasts over 450 different films that are attended by over 100,000 people and it just keeps growing!

If you do make it into the city for the film festival, there’s a good chance you’ll want to do a little more than just be at the cinema all day. This is the perfect time to experience cross country skiing in Sweden and if you’re in Gothenburg, the best place to go is OK Landehofs ski resort. As soon as the temperature gets cold enough, the resort lays down artificial snow so that you can enjoy the 3.5 km track. There’s a natural snow track that’s 2.5 km in length as well.

No matter what the season may be, a visit to the city is a great time to stroll through the Gothenburg Museum of Art. It contains one of the most comprehensive collections of Nordic art that you’ll find anywhere in the world and features artists such as Carl Larsson, Edvard Munch, Bruno Liljefors, and Anders Zorn. The building itself was built to commemorate the 300^th anniversary of the city and is a great example of neo-classical architecture.

From there, a visit to Gustaf Adolf Square is definitely in order. Not only does the canal route through this square, but it is also the location of some of Gothenburg’s most notable buildings. There are several monuments to explore in this expansive square as well and you’re close by to several fabulous little eateries that will quickly douse any hunger pains you might be having from your exploration of this beautiful city.
