Travel to Oaxaca

Oaxaca is a common name for cities in Mexico. The most popular of them is the capital Oaxaca, located in the Mexican state which shares its name. You’ll find this city at the base of the Sierra Madres, with several Colonial-era buildings creating a magnificent walking tour of the community. When combined with Monte Alban, you’ll find a stay here to be one of the most interesting that Mexico offers.

The sheer size of Monte Alban takes your breath away on its own. It was one of the earliest cities in the Americas, founded as far back as the 5^th century BC. It was occupied by several cultures, with well-developed ruins giving you a full glimpse of what life used to be like here. From the Main Plaza to the ballcourt to the impressive stairs that take you to the South Platform, you’ll want to give yourself a full day to see everything here.

You’ll want to see the beautiful 16^th century Plaza de la Constitucion, which was never paved during the Colonial period. Only a marble fountain was placed in the square, and even then, it happened 200 years after it was constructed.

There are several museums to see in Oaxaca as well, including the Rufino Tamayo Museum, the Religious Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Then be sure to visit the markets of the city, especially the Food Market, though it is officially called the November 20 Market. The food stands which dominate the location create a cacophony of smells not to be missed.
