Perhaps the first thing you will notice when walking through Old Town is the lack of modern development. Amongst the traditional brick buildings and tree-lined paths, you will find bakeries turning out dozens of delicious pastries, boutiques with handmade clothing, relaxing sidewalk cafes and tiny markets with unique local products.

There are several landmarks to find in Puerto Vallarta as well. The Plaza de Armas is an excellent destination for public concerts. Visit the archaeological museum for a collection of art that pre-dates the Hispanic culture in the city. Then take a stroll along The Malecon, which is the traditional Sunday destination for a community stroll.

The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the city’s most endearing landmarks and it is still in use. You’ll find it is open every day, offers services in English and Spanish, and mass is available on Saturdays and Sundays. At the top of the church tower, you’ll find a single crown, designed in the fashion of the one worn by Empress Carlota.

A popular event in Viejo Vallarta is the Old Town Art Walk. Every Wednesday between October and April, galleries hold free cocktail receptions that are always open to the public. In the galleries, you will find everything from authentic Mexican arts and crafts to contemporary paintings from the region’s most challenging artists.

Canopy Tours

In recent years, canopy tours have become a favorite adventure for tourists in Puerto Vallarta. Originally developed in the rainforests of Costa Rica, canopy tours allow thrill-seeking travelers to ride pulley lines between platforms high in the trees. During the tours, helpful guides are on hand to help even the most timid participants make the most of the scenic experience. As you glide from tree to tree, the guides will also point out unique plant life and offer plenty of information about the rainforest’s extensive ecosystem. A Tour To San Sebastian

If you want to go deeper into the rainforest and see the remains of a once-prosperous mining town, take the 15 minute flight to San Sebastian. Though seeing the town of San Sebastian can be an eye-opening experience, the journey can be just as captivating. The short tour flights fly low over the mountains and the rainforest canopy, passing picturesque waterfalls and canyons. When you reach the remote village of 500 situated at over 4,300 feet, it might be hard to spot San Sebastian’s prosperous past. Yet, remnants of the 18th century silver boom that drew over 30,000 people to the area are hiding throughout the countryside.

Whale and dolphin watching

Out in Banderas Bay, one of the most popular family-friendly activities is a whale watching tour. Each year, families of humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of Banderas Bay from their Artic homes. Here, the whales breed and raise their young in the bay’s protected waters. Conveniently, the whales visit the bay during the peak of the tourist season – December to March. There are plenty of tours available tailored to both whale watching and photography. Not to be outdone by the humpback whale, dolphins also offer plenty of fun for tourists. In addition to boats that tour the bay allowing visitors to observe bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat, some organizations even offer trips to the Marietas Islands for scuba diving and snorkeling with these friendly mammals.
