Guadalajara is located in central Mexico and is often described as being the nation’s cultural center. It is the home of mariachi and several cultural festivals and large-scale events are held in the city every year. An international book fair and a global film festival can draw millions of people into the city.
You’ll find yourself drawn to the downtown of Guadalajara and its historic sections. Here you’ll find the Templo Expiatorio del Santisimo Sacramento, the Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres, and numerous buildings that were constructed as early as the 17th century. You’ll find several squares and plazas with gardens along the downtown corridor as well.
In the Plaza de Armas, you’ll find ironwork benches, a kiosk that was made in Paris, and several cafes that will tempt you with their offerings.
One tour that you won’t want to miss can be found at the Jalisco Regional Museum. It has served the community as a school and a museum for the fine arts in the past, but today offers exhibits that focus on pre-history. You’ll find a complete mammoth skeleton on display amongst the 16 halls that are filled with exhibits.
Then stop at the Plaza Tapatia to see the Quetzalcoatl fountain and its magnificent sculptures. To the southeast of the plaza is the Mercado Libertad, which is one of the largest traditional markets in the country.
Guadalajara is a thriving city that invites you to explore the past as you enjoy the modern Mexican culture. It is an amazing destination that will tempt you to keep returning for more.
