Travel to Guinea
The Republic of Guinea can be found in Western Africa. It is a land where there are more than two-dozen indigenous languages spoken. Once known as French Guinea, today it may also be called Guinea-Conakry to distinguish its unique identity in the region.
These various cultures can be explored in more detail at the National Museum, which is located in Conakry. Exhibits include some of the various traditional masks and instruments that each culture has incorporated into their customs.
For those who love a good outdoor adventure, try the Foutah Djallon area. You’ll find beautiful views are waiting for you, along with some natural wonders to discover. The area is littered with waterfalls, tall cliffs, and several well-developed hiking areas. Guided tours are available, with backpacking trips of up to 5 days possible with some organizations.
You’ll also want to explore the coastline that is available between Conakry and Guinea-Bissau. Many of the beaches are untouched and the mangroves are teeming with life. Try visiting Sabolan Village if you’re looking for an eco-tourism opportunity. Some beach camping may be available on occasion as well.
It is also possible to rent a boat to head out to Tristao, an island archipelago that is near the border. Boats run a couple of times per week, so you may need to plan an extended stay on the islands. There you will find an isolated natural reserve filled with turtles, manatees, and numerous birds.
Guinea is a unique destination that often sees political unrest seep into it from its neighbors. Be vigilant around the markets, restaurants, and the airport and apply common sense. In doing so, you may find this nation to be a fascinating option to explore Africa.
