Travel to Liberia
The Republic of Liberia is situated on the Atlantic Coast of Africa. More than 20 different languages are spoken, but English is the official language of the country. For many years, this nation was one of the world’s leading producers of rubber. It began as an American colonization effort, but independence was declared in 1847. It would not be until 1862 when the United States would recognize that freedom, but the UK recognized its independence almost immediately.
Founded by freed slaves, the connections to the U.S. are numerous still today. Even the flag is similar. The infrastructure is Africa’s oldest republic looks very American as well. What you’ll find here, however, is distinctly African.
You’ll find plenty of beaches to enjoy in Liberia, especially around the capital, Monrovia. Look for marked swimming areas and clean beach areas where amenities are provided. If you want to combine some beach time with a chance to learn more about the cultures of Liberia, make your way to Robertsport. Tent camping is often available on the beach.
Be aware the strong tides are common at all beaches. Enter the water at your own risk. The nightlife in Liberia is thriving, with several clubs sporting large crowds of ex-pats. Concerts are held throughout many of the cities, especially during the dry season, and most clubs offer live music each night.
There are health and political considerations that must be evaluated before finalizing a trip to Liberia. Not only has the country dealt with ebola outbreaks in the past, but the government can be somewhat unstable at times. Be careful and deliberate, work with local guides, and that will allow you to have the best possible experience.
