Best of Mandurah

What to see and do in Mandurah ?

Mandurah is 72 kilometres south of the Western Australia capital of Perth. It’s the second-largest city in the state, and is a popular holiday spot owing to its beach location and attractions. Mandurah is also part of the Peel region of Western Australia, where mining is a main economic activity – which includes gold mining. The city is best known for its fabulous beaches and huge, protected waterways – as well as its profusion of blue swimmer crabs and playful dolphins offshore. It’s a great place for a getaway, whether a quick one from Perth or elsewhere in Australia, or from abroad.

Mandurah is a beautiful city with Venetian-style waterways and glorious beaches where you can spend your days relaxing and letting your cares just float away. Outside the city there’s the stunning natural beauty of the bush while offshore there are equally rich experiences to be had, with the creatures of the sea.

Mandurah has a Mediterranean climate and is hot in the summer, with temperatures averaging around 27 degrees Celsius maximum, and cool in the winter months, from June to August, when it dips to around 9 degrees. This makes the summer months, from December to February, the best time to visit this wonderful city if you want to take advantage of the superb beaches.

One popular activity in Mandurah is dolphin tours, taking a boat out to the Peel Estuary. You can also see turtles and at certain times of the year there are migrating whales in the area. Many scuba diving operators offer tours where you can jump right in and swim with the dolphins, making for an unforgettable experience wit these intelligent creatures. Alternatively, you can hire a canoe or kayak and see if you can paddle up to them.

Staying with animals, Peel Zoo is a small zoo on the banks of the Murray River and is 10 minutes outside the city. You can get right up close with its residents, and among the big attractions are the mysterious Tasmanian devils.

The Peel area is well known for its wines, and you can go on a wine tour and take it all in. All together, there are over 200 hectares of grapes under cultivation, and tours are a popular day-trip for visitors. The vineyards were established in the 1850s by immigrants from Italy, but didn’t really take off until the 1970s.

A visit to Mandurah Community Museum allows you to get a glimpse of the region’s rich past and heritage. If you love golf, there’s a world-class course right on the beach.

After all the fresh ocean air and excursions during your stay, you’ll be famished and ready for the harvests of the ocean at Mandurah’s many fine restaurants, where the specialty, of course, will be the famous blue swimmer crab.
