This city is absolutely beautiful, as it is framed by buildings that are at least 150 years old. Maryborough was settled in 1847, and most of the buildings have survived even until now, and are still in use. Many of these are now used as galleries, museums and places to house collections, and you can go and browse anything and everything from art and books to the inside of the oldest commercial building in Maryborough, Gatakers Building.
The author of Mary Poppins, P. L. Travers, was also born here, and there is a statue of Mary Poppins here that commemorates this wonderful piece of history. If you visit in the June/July school holidays, you can partake in the Mary Poppins Festival! You can also see her birthplace, which was formerly the Australian Union Stock Bank. Travers’ father was the manager of the bank here, and so she was born in the residential area above the bank.
Wharf Street, once one of the busiest trading streets in Australia, houses many of the attractions here in Maryborough. Visit the Whistle Stop Museum, or the Old Engine House, a still functioning workshop that churns out machinery with working steam and hot air engines. You can go on a city walk or drive tour as well, which will take you through all the sights and sounds of Maryborough with time to spare. If you’re feeling up to it, you might even want to venture out on one of the ghostly tours of Maryborough – spooky tales, history, a night of entertainment and a three course meal awaits you!
