Taking a cruise on a catamaran around the islands off Yeppoon is a wonderful way to spend some of your time. Along the way you’ll see dolphins and turtles popping up for air. Tour operators organise trips that include stopping off at a secluded beach or cove for lunch. They also provide snorkelling equipment if you want to dive in and have a look at the beautiful sea creatures living along the southern parts of the Great Barrier Reef – one of the wonders of the world.
Visitors can stay on Great Keppel Island, where there’s a number of accommodation options, letting you live your dreams on what is truly a classical paradise island.
Just 15 minutes from Yeppoon Beach is Cooberrie Park, a popular wildlife sanctuary. You can get right up close with some of Australia’s most iconic animals, including kangaroos and koalas. Guests can pet them, and also hold a crocodile if they choose. Among the other inhabitants are birds, monkeys, snakes and fish, and you can have a barbeque at the park.
Capricorn Coast National Park is well worth a day out, and there are a number of walking trails you can go on. The park is a series of reserves along the coast where you can experience the original land and take in the stunning vistas.
If golf’s you’re thing, you’re in luck. Yeppoon Golf Club claims to be the premier golfing location in the area, and if you’re out on the greens in the morning, you may have more than just human company: mobs of grey kangaroos will be hopping by as you tee off.
A great way to spend the evening in Yeppoon is at Floodlights Theatre Restaurant. As you’re wined and dined in style, you can also see a variety show with a skew towards the comedic.
Where is Yeppoon ?
Situated on the coast of Central Queensland, Yeppoon is a town well known for its unspoiled beaches as well as 27 islands just beyond the bay. The humid subtropical climate gives this popular holiday spot temperatures that rise as high as almost 30°C from about November to March and fall as low as 12°C during the mid-year months. Yeppoon is almost 700 kilometres north of the Queensland capital Brisbane and 40 kilometres east of the city of Rockhampton. Among the most visited islands off Yeppoon is Great Keppel Island, a national park lying 20 kilometres out to sea.
