Lihue is the main city of Kauai and most popular gateway to the island, as it has a commercial airport. Lihue is a blend of the emerald allure found throughout Kauai and offers urban comforts. This city has several beaches for sunbathing, shops for souvenirs, and several historical and cultural landmarks. Visit the Kilohana estate to see what life was like on a sugar plantation, partake in a traditional luau, and view the millennia old Alekoko –or Menehune Fishpond. The famous Wailua Falls that appear on tons of Kauai postcards are a short drive from Lihue; photography is a must but hiking is optional.

The island paradise of Kauai is the perfect destination for an island holiday. The fourth largest Hawaiian island offers a wide range of tropical activities; from surfing the flawless waters below to exploring the lush wilderness above. With over 60 beaches around the island, there is one for every type of aquatic fun, from tidal pools to water sports. Accurately nicknamed the ‘Garden Isle,’ half of the island is a State Park or Wilderness Preserve. Take a boat of helicopter tour of the Na Pali Coast and be amazed by the jagged rocky coastline of Kauai from the air or ocean – so make sure to bring those extra camera batteries and film. For an incredible view of the north shore, travel up to the Kalalau Lookout and witness the stunning Kalalau Valley and pristine Na Pali Coast. If you’re feeling really adventurous, climb down the Kalalau Trail into the valley, the only land route into the area.

Poipu on the south shore is home to Spouting Horn Beach Park, named for a natural impersonation of a whale’s spout that frequently sends plumes of ocean water up to the sky. Grab your snorkel and head to Koloa Landing to the east for one of the best places for viewing the abundant marine life, especially turtles. Sandy Poipu Beach, also nearby, is the spot for all types of beach activities including spotting endangered Hawaiian monk seals.

The west side of Kauai is the site of Waimea Canyon State Park and has over 70 kilometres of hiking trails. The largest canyon in the Pacific, Waimea Canyon is 16 kilometres long and one kilometre deep, and provides ample opportunities for postcard-worthy photographs. Stay overnight in a cabin with a reservation in advance and pick up hiking maps from the Kokee Natural History Museum on your way up.
