See and do in western Java

There is a lot to see and do in West Java, to say the least. In order to make the most of your time there, it is a good idea to have a general sense of what there is to experience in West Java, simply so that you can maximise your holiday fun.

One of the things that West Java is renowned for is Ujung Kulon National Park nestled on the western coast of the province. This stunning park was Indonesia’s first ever National Park and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The National Park is a playground for those interested in geology, with inland volcanoes an exciting characteristic of the park. Perhaps of more interest to visitors are the Java one-horned rhinos. Ujung Kulon National Park is the only remaining home of these critically endangered Javan rhinos.

Pangandaran National Park, on the southern end of Pangandaran, is another paradise for wilderness lovers. Swimming holes, hidden caves, well established paths through the dense forestry and an eclectic mix of creatures great and small will have you feeling like you’re in an Amazon rainforest.

If you want to get up really close with the animals of West Java, pay a visit to Taman Safari Indonesia. This safari is both a conservation site and a zoo, were you will have the opportunity to interact with the park’s animals.

After visiting Jakarta and Bandung, you might be keen to get off the beaten path a little and experience the ‘authentic’ Indonesia. The Dragon Village in Tasikmalaya is a community of a mere 311 people within the Neglasari village. This little pocket in the southeast of West Java is largely untouched by modernisation, where you will see houses made of bamboo and roofs of reeds. Traditions are strong and life is a direct contrast to that of the big cities. Villages such as this are plentiful throughout West Java, with many welcoming visitors from near and far.

See and do in central Java

o matter how long you are in Central Java for, make sure that you sample at least one aspect of each the components that make this province so unique. Javanese culture, local food, historical sites and the natural landscape are quite possibly four of the standout characteristics of Central Java. With the average temperature ranging from 18C to 28C throughout the year, Central Java is easy to visit anytime at all.

Three of the must visit sites while in Central Java include the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan and the city of Yogyakarta. Borobudur is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site of Indonesia, famed for its collection of Buddhist stupas which date back to the 9th century. Borobudur is a site of much reverence in both Central Java and wider Indonesia.

The Hindu temple complex of Prambanan was also built in the 9th century and is another awe-inspiring ancient masterpiece which will have you marvelling at what mankind is capable of. For another cultural destination in Central Java, be sure to stop over in Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta is the heritage city of Central Java, a great place to learn more about the province’s history.

Travelling through Central Java you will notice that many of the cities are an impressive fusion of past, present and future. Everything from the architecture to the people represents what Central Java was, is and is evolving into. One moment you’ll be walking through temples which have stood since the dawn of time and the next you’ll be in a shopping mall surrounded by all the latest gismos and gadgets. Contrasts galore await you in Central Java.

If you’re up for a once in a lifetime adventure, why not give climbing Mount Merapi a go. This is the most active volcano in Indonesia, an impressive feat considering the country is dotted with volcanoes, both dormant and active.

See and do in eastern Java

Bromo-Tengger-Semuru National Park is perhaps the most iconic destination in all of East Java. Housing the majestic Mount Bromo, Bromo-Tengger-Semuru National Park is a must do during your East Java holiday. The park is also home to Java’s tallest mountain, Mount Semeru, an active volcano which continues to erupt frequently. The park and its surrounding areas are inhabited by Tengger people, one of the few Hindu communities which remain on the island of Java.

You simply cannot venture to East Java, or anywhere in Indonesia for that matter, and not experience the flavoursome local food. While western food is readily available in the larger cities of Surabaya and Malang, stand your ground and do your very best to turn a blind eye to it. Once you try the deliciously infused local delicacies, which are often fresh and a fraction of the price of western food, you will forget what McDonalds is all together! Similar to the food of Central Java, East Javan cuisine is slightly spicier than that of its neighbour’s. Rujak cingur, sate kelopo and lotong kupang are but three of the countless local specialties worth trying.

Your East Java holiday would not be complete without paying a visit to the city of Malang. Malang, the second largest city in East Java, is a portside city located on the north-eastern coast of Java. It has a strong Hindu history worth learning about and despite the throws of urbanisation, remains much of its historical charm. While in East Java, there are also numerous museums, temples and stupas waiting to be explored. Each encounter will teach you more and more about the island of Java, its people and its past.
