Travel to Penang

One of the most popular destinations in Asia, Penang attracts some six million visitors every year. Famous for its superb beaches, its many cultural landmarks and a nightlife that can only be described as buzzing, this part of Malaysia needs to be on every traveller’s itinerary at some point in their lives.

Despite the bright lights and the lively nightlife, there is still something wonderfully relaxed about life here. The traditional friendliness of the Malaysian people is evident wherever you go, and with a range of fun activities on offer you will want to do more than simply sunbathe when you’re here.

There are a number of areas in Penang which are ideal for using as your base. The most popular, especially for overseas visitors, is Batu Ferringhi, an attractive and lively seaside location which is home to a large number of accommodation options.

Georgetown is the capital of Penang Island, and it’s the place to be if you want to find out more about the region’s fascinating history. This part of Malaysia presents the visitor with an intriguing mix of traditional heritage and cutting edge modernity. Even if this isn’t going to be your base, you should come and experience it anyway during your stay.

Best of Penang

What to see and do in Penang ?

One of the best ways to discover more about Penang in general and Georgetown in particular is by hiring a bicycle. The areas around the beaches are particularly pleasant on a bike, although you should try to avoid the busier roads and highways during the peak traffic hours

Sometimes a little rest and relaxation is needed. And when this happens on a holiday to Penang it would be a good idea to book a sunset dinner cruise on one the boats at Tanjung Bungah. Such a trip gives you a chance to enjoy an evening on the ocean waves coupled with a quality meal, and of course the backdrop of a stunning sunset will prove to be hugely impressive.

You can shop till you drop in most holiday destinations, but at Batu Ferringhi you can enjoy the slightly different experience of a night market. The place gets increasingly busy as the evening gets later, and if you’re good at bartering you can find a wonderful selection of bargains. Even if you aren’t an expert negotiator, it can still be fun to try your hand at it.

If you prefer your retail therapy under cover and in air conditioned comfort, try the Gurney Mall instead. With seven storeys of shops selling just about everything, you are sure of a retail experience that will tick all of your personal boxes. And when you need to relax, there are several restaurants and coffee shops ready and waiting to welcome you. It’s located on the northern coast of Penang Island near the Sunrise Tower, and even if you’re not planning on doing any shopping it’s still well worth a visit.

There are several locations in Penang which offer a wide choice of water sports, and Tanjung Bungah is certainly among the best of them. Here you can snorkel and scuba dive in the clear waters or, if you’re looking for something a little more white knuckle, take to the waves on water skis. There is an excellent water sports centre here, offering kayaks, boats, canoes and all the equipment you’re likely to need for a great day of adventuring.
