Often referred to as Japan’s second city, Osaka is a vibrant multicultural destination that is set in the heart of the Kansai region. With a population of over 2.5 million, it’s a bustling city full of unique cuisine, stylish shopping spots and charming Japanese gardens. While there’s plenty to see and do there’s also the chance relax and unwind at Nishikinohama Beach Park.
Exploring the various neighbourhoods of the central city is a great place to start your holiday to Osaka as each area has something different to offer. Minami and Dotonabi are two of Osaka’s central entertainment points, where you can shop til’ you drop and marvel at the bright neon lights and signs that line the streets. Other big attractions include some of the oldest temples in Japan such as the Shitennoji and traditional tranquil gardens that pop up throughout the city. On the quieter side of things, Kinosaki is a quaint town steeped in Japanese history and is home to some of the most relaxing hot spring baths in Japan.
Entertaining the kids shouldn’t be difficult as there are a range of top attractions throughout the city. The Osaka Aquarium is a good place to start where 15 huge tanks are home to an array of sea life including whale sharks, jellyfish and penguins. A family holiday also wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Universal studios. The theme park not only gives everyone a chance to meet and greet their favourite characters, but some of the tallest rollercoasters offer amazing views of Osaka Bay.
When it comes to eating, the Osakans know best. Their motto is ‘eat until you drop’ and luckily you don’t have to fork out a fortune to try it out. Seek out the district of downtown Dotonbori to experience some of the best traditional dishes including grilled octopus, kitsune udon soup and kushikatsu vegetable skewers. Also, keep an eye out for ‘Teppanyaki’ restaurants, where the chef will come and cook your meal in front of your table.
If you’re visiting throughout winter 2014 make sure you visit the Art Festival of Light, where the central area of Nakanoshima will literally light up with light shows, illuminations and light-scapes.
