Travel to Gianyar

Gianyar is one of eight administrative regencies on the predominately Hindu island of Bali in Indonesia. It’s the second most populated regency in Bali and has the second most important tourism industry, after the main regency of Badung. The arty and cultural town of Ubud is a key attraction in Gianyar – pronounced GEE-AN-yar – and has drawn famous artists from all over the world for many decades. A Gianyar holiday in this part of Bali allows you to see more of the ‘real’ Bali, outside of the more built-up areas of Kuta and elsewhere in the south.

One of the best places to stay in Gianyar is in the hilly central Bali town of Ubud, the cultural and artistic heart of the island. There’s ready and extremely affordable accommodation all around the town centre and right out into the ricefields of the countryside. Several resorts are located on the edge of the town, many of them specialising in spas, something for which Bali is also well-known. Other Gianyar accommodation includes Keramas, a beach area along the southern coast that’s a popular surfing destination. Gianyar has a small town of the same name and there’s suitable accommodation there too.

Best of Gianyar

What to see and do in Gianyar ?

Hindu ceremonies and rituals are never-ending in Bali, and occur almost daily, including cremations of the departed. The Balinese are fiercely devotional and can seem to spend more time on their religion than their work, and certainly they spend vast sums on ceremony on their rites. When they occur, life comes to a complete halt as hundreds if not thousands of the faithful overtake the streets and roads in colourful sarongs and headdresses, bearing towering offerings and heady incense for the gods amid a cacophony of gamelan, drumbeat and crashing cymbals. If you’re lucky while in Gianyar, especially in Ubud, you’ll be able to witness one of these extraordinarily arresting events that even appear to make time stand still.

In Bali, the people and their religious events are a tourist attraction in their own right, and the Balinese are only too glad to let you witness their most precious and cherished of ceremonies. It gives them a glowing sense of pride that people would stop and watch what to them are ordinary events but to the outsider are anything but.

In Ubud, the Royal Palace in the centre of the town is worthy place to visit. Parts of it are open to the public as the family lives in the complex, and a sarong-clad prince may be idling by and will be only too happy to stop and chat.

Just outside Ubud is a water temple called Tampaksiring that’s a place of spiritual cleansing for locals and visitors. Just change into a sarong – it’s its own complete dressing room as the cloth shrouds you while you undress – and slip into the main pool area, letting its ornate and offerings-covered fountains wash over you, casting away your troubles and ills.

Try some of the many mouth-watering Balinese dishes, often lavishly luxuriating in coconut and smeared with fiery chilli, in some of the excellent restaurants in the centre of Ubud as the delicately lilting tones of temple orchestras practicing for the next ceremony float joyously by on the sleepy breeze.
