Taveuni is a Fijian tourism paradise. It’s located just seven kilometres east of the second largest island of Vanua Levu and is itself the third biggest island in the country of 322 islands. Taveuni is known as the ‘Garden Island’, due to its abundant vegetation, flowers and verdant rainforest, and is only 42 kilometres long and 12 kilometres wide. Visitors arriving into Fiji at the main Nadi International Airport can fly on to Taveuni Island Airport in the north of the island, a flight of about 90 minutes. The island’s appeal lies not only in its spectacular surroundings but also its uncommercial nature.
Dotted all around the island are sumptuous resorts where guests can really luxuriate in style, soaking up the sun and experiencing this Fijian paradise. One area that’s good to stay while on Taveuni is Waiyevo, a small and pretty village where many of the island’s facilities and official offices are located. There’s good accommodation all around the area. If you’re after convenience, nearby the airport, in Matei, also has lots of accommodation, and you won’t have too far to go once you disembark your flight.

Best of Taveuni
What to see and do in Taveuni ?
If you love nature and wildlife, you’ll love Taveuni, especially in the incredible tropical setting that wows tourists and combined with the sun and sand and sea make a holiday to this part of Fiji a truly unforgettable experience. There’s lots to see, do and immerse yourself in on this magical island.
There are many areas to stay on the island that have their own individual characteristics. However, most of the resort areas are located in or near the beaches, while other accommodation is found further back in the lush environment of the interior. Wherever you choose to go, you’ll have a whale of a time.
Apart from the beautiful beaches and ocean, Bouma National Heritage Park is a major attraction on Taveuni. It was designed to conserve the island’s forests and its wild inhabitants and also to provide a way of sustaining the villagers of the area, through tourism.
Take a trek up to Des Veaux Peak; it’s the island’s second-highest point and gives sweeping views from its elevation of 1,200 metres above sea level. It’s reached via a combination of 4×4 and hiking, and for the clearest views it’s best to go early in the morning to avoid cloud build-up.
Have a look at the blowholes along the southern coastline. They’re a reminder of the island’s volcanic past and are spectacular to watch, often shooting as high as around 50 metres. If you’re taking a guided tour around the island, most of them will stop for a look at the blowholes.
An exhilarating experience is the natural Waitavala Waterslide near the village of Waiyevo. It’s advised, however, to avoid this rainforest rock slide if there has been heavy rain, due to the dangers of slipping and injury.
An interesting outing during your holiday on Taveuni is to visit the Wairiki Mission just outside the village of Wairiki. It’s a Catholic mission and the largest on the island. Some tourists like to go on Sundays so they can hear the magnificent singing.
Visitors can see amazing waterfalls and rainforests in the Lavena Nature Reserve, and the 180 degree meridian runs through the middle of the island and is marked by a red light.
Lake Tagimoucia is actually a dormant volcano and is in the centre of the island. It takes a full day to get there, leaving early in the morning and not returning till late in the evening, so be well prepared if setting out on a trek to it – the effort is well worth it as the views are outstanding.
