Travel to Labasa

Labasa is found in the north east of Vanua Levu, the second largest of Fiji’s islands, and is the largest town on the island. Labasa doesn’t offer any commercial tourist attractions. Rather it offers unspoiled natural beauty and is inhabited by friendly and welcoming locals. Vanua Levu is less tourist-oriented than the larger Viti Levu, where you’ll find more affordable prices. Affordability and the opportunity for homestays proves popular with backpackers. You’ll need to depend on locals, as gatekeepers to the wonders of their island, for accommodation, tours and discovering little-known hideaway spots. White sandy beaches, lush rainforest, isolated hideaways, sacred sites and dive spots, makes Labasa the perfect destination for free-spirited travellers and a romantic adventure for couples.

Labasa accommodation includes a handful of hotels that offer privacy at an affordable price. To be absorbed in the culture of the locals choose a homestay for part of your visit. For the best in budget-friendly, there’s backpacker accommodation available, providing a great way to meet like-minded travellers. To take advantage of the unspoiled location choose a resort in the region, that provides exclusive access to beaches and some of Fiji’s famous dive spots. Labasa accommodation features low-rise construction; meaning your break from mass civilisation is as pure as possible.

What to see and do in Labasa ?

Staying in Labasa gives you access to Fiji’s many groups of islands. Sailing and cruising between island resorts is the perfect way to mingle with resort-ers and discover each island’s unique culture. Explore the town by trekking through rainforest, visiting the Wasavula Ceremonial Site, Snake Temple and Cobra Rock and hopping on the Floating Island.

You won’t find anything resembling stock-standard urban living and that’s where the beauty lies, with a visit to Labasa. The relatively small size of Vanua Levu means you can explore natural gems in as little or as much time as you like. Vanua Levu is a popular destination for honeymoons, anniversaries and pre-wedding escapes because of the many natural hideaways that afford the opportunity for exploration and privacy.

Upon exploring the local terrain you’ll observe the country’s main industry as you pass by sugar cane fields and the sugar mill. Explore rainforests to find waterfalls and birdlife. After rainforest trekking head down out to the coast. Visit Korovatu Beach – loved by locals – for swimming and picnics. Bring your own food and water and wear a t-shirt to avoid offending the conservative locals.

The lack of commercialisation means your stay at Labasa will be eco-friendly, the produce mostly organic and the food limited but prepared and eaten by locals. Food options include Chinese and Indian, with particularly delicious vegetarian Indian food.

The closest structural attraction in the area is that of the Wasavula Ceremonial Site, located just south of Labasa. At the entrance to the site there is a sacred standing rock, believed by locals to have sprouted from the ground. The stone marks the entrance to the village cemetery. Ask for permission before entering and present a sevusevu or gift.

Cobra Rock is a popular attraction in the region. Located 10km from Labasa, you’ll pass two small temples on the way. Cobra Rock is described as resembling a cobra poised to strike. Remove your shoes and circle the rock at least three times. Covered in floral and tinsel garlands and surrounded by offerings of fruit, coconut milk and fire, it guards the Snake Temple. The Snake Temple is a beautiful building of bright red, blue and yellow and is visited by several hundred devotees everyday.

Outside of Labasa there’s many activities to enjoy on the island of Vanua Levu, from scuba diving the soft coral reefs to tagging along to local-run shark feedings.
