Travel to Qamea Island

Read about and get inspiration for a trip to the city, check for the cheapest flights and hotels in Qamea Island

Qamea is an unspoilt island lying off the coast of Tavuni, Fiji. It is a tiny island known for its wildlife, which is unusually diverse because foreign predators were never introduced to the island. Qamea is noted for its migration of ‘lairo’ or huge land crabs that march en masse to the ocean once a year.

The island is surrounded by beautiful beaches and some of Fiji’s best coral. Head to Qamea for a relaxing island escape and get to know the real Fiji. Hike through lush rainforest, swim in the crystal-clear sea and enjoy year-round perfect temperatures.

Stay at Maqai Beach and enjoy traditional village hospitality. The accommodation is run by the locals and is a great budget option. You can swim straight from the beach or spend the day nestled amongst the palms in your waterfront bure. Local instructors can also take you out to Maqai Beach’s excellent surf break.

For higher-end Qamea Beach accommodation book your stay one of the luxurious resorts and spas. They are perfect for a honeymoon or to celebrate that special anniversary. You can learn to dive or have an on the beach spa treatment. Staff will accommodate your every need and try to make your trip as romantic as possible.

Best of Qamea Island

What to see and do in Qamea Island ?

You can choose your own adventure on Qamea Island. If you want to experience Fijian culture then spend a day in a local village and participate in a kava ceremony. If you are chasing excitement, spend a day out on the ocean. Go diving, learn how to paddleboard or get up for an early morning surf.

One of the best ways to enjoy Qamea is to spend a day snorkelling and exploring the reef. The island is so small it’s possible to circumnavigate the island on a snorkelling tour. A local guide will show you some of the best spots, such as Cabbage Patch, an undersea garden. Half-way through the day stop and can enjoy a BBQ lunch cooked fresh on the beach over an open fire.

Snorkelling isn’t the only water-based activity on the island. Divers are well catered for with most accommodation offering diving trips and introductory courses. For something a little faster try skiing or slow your day down with a gentle kayak.

If you need to relax after a big day on the water then book yourself a spa treatment. You can try a local Fijian treatment like a hot-shell massage or a Fijian hibiscus and coconut wrap.

While on the island enjoy a performance by local villages, called a meke. A meke is a night of dancing and singing where traditional stories are told and dances performed. While watching the show, try kava, a drink made from the roots of the kava shrub. It has a slight sedative affect and is immensely popular in Fiji.

Take time away from the ocean and explore the interior of the island. The island is covered in thick tropical rainforest and has many trails to explore. Ask your accommodation to pack a picnic and hike to a local waterfall to enjoy your feast. If you still have the energy, trek some of the hills before walking back down to the beach.

If you are lucky enough to be on the island near the end of the November you can watch the lairo crabs on their annual migration. The migration only happens once a year, under a full moon and is one of nature’s most amazing sights. Thousands of crabs will scuttle out from the jungle and head for the sea.
