The beaches and ocean are a definite attraction, and much of the accommodation is located there. Further inland, however, provides the lush, tropical setting that Fiji is equally famous for.
No visit to Sigatoka would be complete without a trip to Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park. The dunes are 3 kilometres west of the town and at the point where the Sigatoka River runs into the South Pacific Ocean. The dunes extend to around 650 hectares and can be up to 60 metres high. They’re the result of millions of years of formation, and important artefacts dating back thousands of years have been found during archaeological excavations of them. They’re also the location of one of the biggest burial sites in the Pacific. Guided tours of the dunes are available, or you can just wander around yourself.
A wonderful day out is a cruise on the Sigatoka River, where you can see the spectacular scenery as you glide gently past. Some operators run a river ‘safari’ that includes visits to traditional villages upstream where visitors can see how the real Fijians live.
Kula Eco Park in the Korotogo area of Sigatoka is a major tourist attraction. This award-winning nature park sits on 11 hectares spread across three valleys. Visitors can see birds and reptiles as well as turtles, corals and tropical fish in marine displays. The park says it allows visitors to see the ‘wild side’ of Fiji in comfort, and there’s nearly a kilometre of wooden walkways and bridges to experience it all.
Visitors can also go on a cave safari, starting out from Sigatoka to explore Naihehe Cave, the largest cave system in the country. Along the way, your guide will tell you about the fascinating history of the area.
For many visitors to this part of Fijian paradise, they’re going to do nothing other than relax on the beach and soak up the glorious sunshine. Natadola Beach, with its wide sweep of white sand, is considered to be among the best in the entire country.
