Travel to Viwa Island

Read about and get inspiration for a trip to the city, check for the cheapest flights and hotels in Viwa Island

Viwa Island, surrounded by thriving coral reef, is in the Yasawa Islands Group. It is one of the best locations to go snorkelling, diving, in fact all water sports. The beaches are of white, soft sand and the water is crystal clear aquamarine in appearance. The film, The Blue Lagoon was produced in parts of this archipelago. The Tui Yasawa, Paramount Chief, lives here, so permission is required to visit all of the islands, including Viwa Island with the exception of Tavewa.

The first thing you notice about Viwa Island is its refreshing remoteness. Viwa Island accommodation provides pure seclusion yet a connection with Fijian cultural daily life. A Viwa Island stay provides an understated resort of 11 beachfront villa-like huts or bures. The bure-decks are wide and they have thatched roofs and soaring ceilings. There is a free-and-easy element to the space. It is affordable and provides only for adult couples. Bures can sleep two people in privacy, and are stocked with all modern conveniences. There are also 4-person bures for couples holidaying together. Polished timber floors and soft, comfy beds complement an open-plan functionality which flows into the living area, stylish and tasteful. The resort, which is the only accommodation here, is one of Fiji’s most exotic. Views from this Viwa Island accommodation are simply breathtaking.

What to see and do in Viwa Island ?

Viwa island is on the outer circumference of the Yasawa Islands. Hence transport options are fewer than other island chains. There are limited flights from Fiji airport, and you could charter a sea plane or helicopter to get to Viwa. The most popular option is the Yasawa Flyer: a swift and smooth-sailing yellow catamaran, somewhat like the European hovercraft or ferry except with two hulls.

Viwa Island and its resort, around which all activities centre, has so much to offer. It is an adult only private, secluded exotic island with only a few avenues of access by transport. It is a place for a romantic getaway for two, or several couples wanting to relax and kick back together. The island offers many popular activities such as snorkelling safaris in the aquamarine waters where you can experience the wonderful sea environment amongst flourishing coral reef culture.

You might want to visit Naibalebale Village, one of the few remaining historically traditional Fijian villages – which are a 5-10 minute walk from the resort. You are free to soak in the atmosphere of one of the few remaining historic traditional Fijian villages. You could try basket weaving, sulu tying lessons.

For the more adventurous, you might take a kayaking session or do some beach volleyball or petanque (boules). The ambience of the island is free, easy, tropical beachside living. All activities come with the resort package, which is a bonus. There is an Around the Island Adventure and this can live up to your vivid imagination if you want it to.

You might try handline fishing. If you catch one it can be served up for your night-time meal, cooked by an internationally accredited chef. Deep sea fishing and diving, for more serious water activities, are on tap for the adventurous.

At night there is a band playing at the main part of the resort. You might have an extremely fun theme night if you want to join the party. However the main attraction is the restaurant Rai Ki Wasa Terrace. It specialises in freshly caught seafood made by both European and traditional Fijian methods. With the catch of the day and the resort’s own organic vegetable garden, you have high chance of ordering a culinary masterpiece. There is a beautiful view from the Terrace over to the moonlit sea and for the seriously romantic, a meal under the stars on the beach is also possible – and definitely advised.
