Hokitika features many different scenic spots for you to enjoy your holiday. Hokitika Beach, with its unique black sand, will delight and enthrall, and is the perfect backdrop for a sunset stroll. You can also visit Hokitika Gorge, where you can take a tour and even a picnic, and marvel at the clarity of the water here. If you’re lucky, you might even meet some of New Zealand’s native animals, including tui, bellbirds and fantails. There is also the Lake Kaniere Scenic Reserve, which features many different forest walks and even a waterfall! Hokitika also hosts the National Kiwi Centre, where you can get up close and personal with New Zealand’s national bird. Hokitika is also a great place to go fishing – whether you’re interested in white baiting or surf casting, fishing in rivers or lakes, there is a place here for you!
If you’re after a bit of a thrill, you can go on the treetop walk near Lake Mahinapua. The walkways are completely enclosed, so children and adults alike can visit and see the wonders of this wonderful place. You can also climb to the very top of the Hokitika Tower, and experience the magnificent vista Hokitika has to offer. Relax at the Mahinapua Café afterwards, with delightful meals and some more great views of the bush.
Hokitika is also full of history, being the centre of the gold rush in New Zealand in the 1860s, and you can try your own luck in Ross and Goldsborough. You can even buy your own pan and see if you can find a couple of gold flecks in official fossicking areas.
Finally, round off your trip here with a meal at the Ocean View Restaurant. It is placed right above the beach, so you can enjoy your delightful meal with some wine while you overlook the sun setting, the perfect way to finish off a perfect holiday
