What to see and do in Ohakune ?

One of Ohakune’s major attractions is its use as a base for the nearby slopes of Turoa and Whakapapa. Ohakune provides fantastic access to the breathtaking snowy mountains, as well as all the exhilarating fun to be had on them. The town itself is a-buzz with adventure and activity, with bush-walking, mountain treks and climbs, canoeing, fishing and even bungy-jumping. Ohakune is an outdoor adventure just waiting to happen.

The stunning natural beauty that inspired the Lord of the Rings is a must-see when visiting Ohakune. At Mount Ngauruhoe you can visit the cone-shaped volcano better known to fans as Mount Doom. Whether a Lord of the Rings fan or not, the absolutely magnificent sight of a volcano is something everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. At the other end of the scale, the Mangawhero Falls on the Ohakune Mountain road is an idyllic spot, where Gollum happily catches a fish, and above which the Ithilien Camp was filmed.

Aside from film, Ohakune is a town steeped in culture, with the Snow Fashion Show and Ohakune Mardi Gras both opening in June. The town has a rich history as the stopping point for travellers when heading north, and you can experience some of the town’s majestic history along the Ohakune Old Coach Road—today a very enjoyable walk. The town is also home to a volunteer-run museum and the National Army Museum—a world class facility—is just a short drive away at Waiouru. Ohakune is also home to some fantastic art and culture museums, as well as providing great cafés, restaurants, and bars to fill your tummy after a good day’s exploring. After lunch, why not head out for some excellent shopping at some of the town’s boutique stores, or spend the day relaxing at one of Ohakune’s day spas. The choice is yours.

The Tongario National Park and Alpine Crossing are great places for hiking and trekking if you prefer the outdoors, and there are several spots around Ohakune perfect for a spot of fishing or a lovely picnic.
