Palmerston North has a very youthful vibe, probably because of its students spread throughout all studying at the Massey University, it is well worth a visit to soak up that youthful energy and admire the architecture. There is a real historical buzz to Palmerston North, many of the original stores date back to the 1920s and 1930s and have been transformed into funky caféS, restaurants and boutiques.
A must see is The Square, located in the city centre, it is Palmy’s first park. The area is huge and is dotted with an array of green lawns for picnicking or lakes for lazing by. Spend your day admiring Palmy’s green thumb efforts and hire a retro tandem bike to cruise around the gardens and the city. The Square also contains the city’s war memorial – a must-see.
Another garden worth visiting is the Victoria Esplanade Gardens. Covered in native bushland it is a great place to spend the day out with the family, there is everything on hand including a café and even a mini railway for the kids.
