Whitianga is a charming seaside town on the northeast coast of New Zealand’s North Island, and is the main settlement in Mercury Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula. It’s a busy fishing town with a good deal of agriculture spread out beyond it. The area has a reputation for great seafood, as well as fine wines. The many beach areas are a popular attraction for tourists from all over, and one has been the setting for a Hollywood movie. Visitors arriving into New Zealand though Auckland International Airport will have just over a two-hour drive to get to this enchanting location.
Whitianga town has quality hotels and good motels. It also has self-catering apartments and beachfront resorts. Flaxmill Bay is also a good place to stay, and there’s a range of accommodation there to choose from. Other locations with good properties include Cooks Beach, Simpsons Beach and Hot Water Beach, location of beach hot springs that attract large numbers of people. There’s also accommodation to be found in the Hahei, Coroglen and Kuaotunu areas, among others. For those who would like to get a good sense of the local countryside, a stay at a rustic farm is a wonderful holiday experience.

What to see and do in Whitianga ?
Whitianga – the town’s full name is Te Whitianga a Kupe – is a wonderfully scenic area of New Zealand where you’re bound to have the most enjoyable of times. It makes for an excellent holiday destination. There’s lots to see and do in and around this deepwater harbour town, including offshore fishing and delightful cruises.
Whitianga has a warm and temperate climate, with temperatures hitting 20C during the summer months and averaging around 10C in the winter. There is quite a lot of rain, however, especially in June. It tends to be driest around November time.
Pay a visit to the otherworldly Cathedral Cove; it’s otherwise known as the Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve. Part of the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was shot here, and hundreds of thousands of people visit this dramatic location annually.
Around 12 kilometres from Whitianga is the peculiar sight of Hot Water Beach. Underneath the sands are two hot springs whose steaming waters bubble up to the top during the tidal changes. Visitors can immerse themselves in the sand and create their own, personal hot spring. Expect the beach to be thronged, however, as it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area.
For animal lovers, Whiti Farm Park is set on eight acres and allows visitors to get right up to farm animals and others, including hand-feeding the creatures. There’s also a bird and reptile park in Whitianga; visitors can also stay there as they run a bed and breakfast as well as a campervan park.
The waters off Whitianga are great for scuba diving or just snorkelling, and there’s a number of operators who take tourists out for dives. You can also learn to scuba dive before setting out. If you’d prefer to stay dry, take a tour in a glass-bottom boat and see the creatures of the near-deep from the comfort of your seat.
If you’re lucky enough to be in Whitianga in September, you can indulge yourself in the annual Scallop Festival, which features all kinds of seafood and is enormously popular. Otherwise, you can sample amazing fresh seafood at some of the restaurants in the town.
