What to see and do in Masterton ?

There are many different activities to do and sights to see during your stay in Masterton. There is, of course, the annual sheep shearing competition, as well as seeing rare native New Zealand birds at the Pukaha Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre. You can also spice your holiday up with a little bit of adventure, with everything from jet boating to hot air ballooning.

The Golden Shears shearing competition is one of the highlights of Masterton’s busy year. Shearers from all over New Zealand and the world congregate here to test their skills against the best of the best. Often referred to as the Wimbledon of sheep shearing, it is a big deal for this town, which is heavily steeped in farming tradition and community. If you are holidaying here while the competition is underway, you might consider spectating, making for a wonderful and unique New Zealand experience.

If you’re more of a nature buff, you can explore some of the stunning fauna on show at the Pukaha Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre. This centre showcases some of New Zealand’s, and indeed, the world’s rarest birds, including North Island kaka, whio and kakariri. You can also meet longfin eels and brightly coloured tuatara! The Wildlife Centre also runs bushwalks, so you can get the genuine wildlife experience, and is open almost every day of the year. After you’ve marvelled at the stunning creatures that reside here, you can relax and have a cup of coffee at Entice Too, which overlooks the beautiful takahes.

There is more nature to be had at Cape Palliser, where you can watch seal colonies in their natural environments. You can also visit the Cape Palliser lighthouse, and if you manage to climb to the very top, you will be rewarded with views that are out of this world. You will be able to see out across the sea, and even catch glimpses of the South Island and its landscape.

If you’re hankering for a little bit more of adventure, there are activities here for you too. You can jetski and boat across the gorgeous coastlines, as well as surf and boogie board. You can even book a day in a hot air balloon to see the sights by air, and there are also plenty of opportunities for fishing buffs here, including possible participation in one of the many fishing contests.
