The arty town of Pai in northern Thailand lies beside a river of the same name, and is near the border with Myanmar. It’s nestled in a scenic valley in Mae Hong Son province, and has a laidback, bohemian atmosphere to it. Pai – pronounced ‘bye’ – has its own airport, and visitors can fly there from nearby Chiang Mai, a flight of just under half an hour by light aircraft. Due to the mountainous surroundings, Pai is cooler than other parts of Thailand, but nonetheless still manages temperature highs of around 37C during the hottest month of the year, in April.

There’s a lot of accommodation in the town itself, especially budget guesthouses that really are budget in terms of rates but have basic amenities, such as hot and cold water, in rooms and also bungalows. Some offer free Wi-Fi for guests’ use and have stunning views of this mountainous region, while others have swimming pools. The guesthouses extend to the surrounding countryside, and may be a good 10- or 15-minute walk outside the town. The more middle-priced and costly accommodation is comprised also of guesthouses but includes luxury resorts, and most of these are located a few kilometres from Pai.

Best of Pai

What to see and do in Pai ?

Pai experienced an upsurge in popularity following the release in 2009 of a Thai romantic film called Pai in Love, and chances are you will fall in love with this charming free-spirited town. Outside of it is the chance to connect with some of the most pristine and beautiful nature on the planet.

Some visitors who come to Pai choose to stay in the town so they’re near to the facilities, and bars and restaurants; there’s certainly a good vibe to the place. For others, however, rustic and more serene accommodation in the countryside offers total respite from the hectic pace of life back home.

Wander around this small town – it won’t take you long – and have a look at the quirky shops and restaurants peppered all around it. To see the surrounding countryside, it’s best to rent some wheels, and bicycles and motorbikes are the most popular options, although visitors should be wary of hiring a motorbike if they’re not used to them – and think of all the health and environmental benefits of bicycle riding anyway.

There are lots of waterfalls in the area you can visit, including Pam Bok, Mae Yen and Mo Paeng. Search out the Wat Phra That Mae Yen temple in the area; it’s atop a mountain and has spectacular views of Pai and the surrounding land. You can ride or cycle right up to it, or take the 353 steps –that’s almost one for every day of the year.

There are sulphuric hot springs around Pai, and when they say hot they mean it, with temperatures of around 80C. Bathing is possible at locations where cool water mixes with the hot, and they’re certainly worth a rejuvenating soaking, although foreigners should be aware of local customs and wear appropriate swimwear.

Pai is popular for trekking, and is used as a base to explore the wonderful natural beauty of this part of northern Thailand. Trekking tours are available all over the town. Other activities in the area include white-water rafting, which is among the best found anywhere in Thailand, and elephant rides.

You won’t be lost for something to do at night-time in Pai. There’s a whole host of bars and restaurants, with all kinds of food and drink on the menu, from Thai to international. Some venues have live music at night, featuring popular Thai bands, so you can rock the night away in true local style.
