Travel to Surat Thani

Surat Thani is the capital of the southerly Surat Thani province, and while a tourist destination in its own right it’s often used to get to the popular Thai resort islands of Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and others. Surat Thani International Airport is just outside the city, and serves domestic as well as international flights. The city has a long history, stretching back to its part in the Srivijaya empire that dates to the 7th century and was based on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Among the curiosities in Surat Thani is a school where monkeys are taught how to pick coconuts.

Cheap and very cheerful is the plentiful budget accommodation in the city, although some hotels may not have such basics as hot water or air-conditioning, and some can be noisy. Wi-Fi is widely available, however. There is also better-quality accommodation to be had in the city, including resorts with large rooms and plenty of cooling air-conditioning to beat the tropical heat. Some of the best, and pricier, hotels are just on the edge of town. Many travellers only stay in the city for short periods, en route to the resort islands, but feel free to stay as long as you like.
