California is in the Pacific Region of the United States. California is the most populous U.S. state. The state capital is Sacramento. Los Angeles is the country’s second most populous city.
About California
Everything that you may have heard about holidays in California is likely to be completely true. The countryside is spectacular, the coastline is breath-taking, the cities are wildly exciting and the climate is sensational. America’s Golden State is almost guaranteed to delight you, if only because there is something for everyone here.
From the manicured golf courses and rugged beaches of the Monterey Peninsula to the iconic designer stores and all-too familiar landmarks of Los Angeles, California is the holiday destination that you simply must not miss. If the West Coast has been calling out to you in recent times, now is the time to respond.
There are so many diverse areas to base yourself. The major cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles offer everything from cultural centres to bustling local neighbourhoods and, as you might expect, the quality of your accommodation is likely to be linked closely to your budget.
Away from these urban environments, there are a number of smaller, more personable locations such as Santa Barbara, Sacramento and San Luis Obispo which offer a slower pace of life. Throughout the state, you will also find a large number of campsites, which are perfect for those who want to get away from it all.
Exploring California is best achieved by hiring a car or perhaps booking bus tickets. It should be noted, however, that traffic can be a major problem in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. Getting around in these cities is less stressful if you use the public transport networks. Trams in San Francisco are a particular favourite with travellers.
Those who revel in the fast pace of cosmopolitan cities will find some of the country’s most exciting destinations during their holidays in California, from the colourfully cultured San Francisco to the dreamy, star-studded Los Angeles. Both are filled with impressive streets lined with slick skyscrapers, and are bordered by suburbs of green parks and waterside sanctuaries.
Those looking for the quieter side of holidays to California will discover breath-taking destinations, including the cool beachside towns of Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz. The state is also home to rugged National Parks such as Death Valley, Yosemite and Redwood, filled with rustic lodges for cosy stays. Whether you want water sports and lazy days on the sands, or day-long treks and wildlife spotting, this diverse state has it all.
There are so many things to see and do in California, but one thing that surely has to be on everyone’s must-do list is a wander along the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As perhaps the most famous pavement in the world, even if you think it’s a little clichéd you should at least have a look. Stars are added to the Walk of Fame every year, and there are now more than 2,500 to be discovered.
It’s difficult to visit LA without getting excited by all the movie-related landmarks and one in particular has become synonymous with the movie industry for almost a century. The TCL Chinese Theatre, formerly Mann’s Chinese Theatre, was built in 1922 and it remains an iconic building that film fans from all over the world pay homage to. Located on Hollywood Boulevard, the famous concrete blocks outside the main entrance feature handprints and footprints of many of the most famous stars of cinema.
Far more tranquil, but no less iconic, is a tour of California’s highly celebrated wine region. There are a number of organised tours available, each of which feature a relaxing journey through some of the most beautiful countryside in the western USA and, of course, a visit to several wineries. If you’re planning to stay in San Francisco during your holiday in California, you can take the shuttle bus from the city and head out into open country.
Eating in California offers perhaps the widest range of international cuisine you’re ever likely to come across. With influences from Europe, Mexico, the Far East and South America all waiting to be enjoyed, you will find yourself spoilt for choice. For the very best flavours of all, however, you should try the fish restaurants on the waterside areas of San Francisco. Fresh, delicious and often surprisingly affordable, it’s the tastiest of all California holiday experiences.
