Port Headland, in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, is among the world’s busiest harbours. It’s famous for its huge ships, long trains, massive salt piles and substantial resource industry. The climate in the area is semi-arid, which means it’s hot year-round. Temperatures can reach a searing 36 degrees Celsius and more in the summer while winter temperatures can fall to 12 degrees but are often in the 20s.
Port Headland is known as the gateway to the Pilbara region, known for its mineral-rich red earth and Aboriginal population. It’s a thriving town with plenty to offer visitors, from beautiful beaches and mangroves to tours of mining operations.

What to see and do in Port Headland ?
With mining and shipping at the heart of Port Headland’s activities, a trip to one of the mines is a must. You can go on a tour of the BHP Billiton Iron Ore mine in Nelson Point and see the enormous excavating machines gouge out large chunks of valuable earth. Visitors can see the workings of this giant industry that has helped to keep the entire Australian economy afloat.
The Port Interpretive Walk runs down the Esplanade in Port Headland and you can see the enormous carrier vessels coming and going from the harbour. Along the walk you can find out about the port’s history. If you’re a fan of trains, BHP Billiton’s iron ore trains are among the longest in the world – up to 3 km long – and a good vantage point to view them is at Redbank Bridge.
The astonishing natural phenomenon known as Staircase to the Moon occurs in the area between March and October. It’s when the full moon is at its peak and causes daily tidal changes that trap water in sand ripples and these reflect the moonlight. It creates the illusion of a staircase leading right up to the moon.
Cemetery Beach is to die for… and it’s a good spot for fishing at high tide. It extends to 1.3 km and is a popular spot with a picnic area. Pretty Pool is another well-known beach and all the beaches in Port Headland are safe for swimming as the waves are generally low. However, in Pretty Pool, check with people in the area for the presence of saltwater crocodiles.
There’s plenty of wildlife to see in Port Headland. Off the coast are bottlenose dolphins as well as migratory whales and sharks – just don’t get too close.
The beaches are alive with flatback turtles during the months from October to March, when they come out of the ocean to nest. This thrilling event can be seen by contacting the Care for Headland Environmental Association.
