What to see and do in Yallingup ?
What is there to do in Yallingup? Lots! Start with the stunning white-sand beaches – Three Bears, Yallingup, Smiths Beach and Injidup – and their excellent surfing. Yallingup Beach is especially good for swimming and snorkelling as it has calm waters due to its sheltering lagoon. There’s also some good fishing to be had at these locations.
A popular tourist attraction is Ngilgi Cave to the northeast of the town. It’s a place of Aboriginal myth and legend and is named after a tale depicting a battle between a good spirit – Ngilgi – and an evil one – Wolgine. In fact, there are caves all around the limestone ridge of Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park but Ngilgi is one of the most popular, and notable for its stunning stalactite, stalagmite, helicitite formations. Mammoth, Lake and Jewel caves are also popular with tourists.
Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park itself is said to have more visitors than any other park in Western Australia. It’s home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including western grey kangaroos, and brush-tailed wallabies. Along the Leeuwin-Naturaliste ridge is the 135-kilometre-long Cape to Cape Track for walking. It offers some of the best coastal and forest scenery and should not be missed.
Yallingup is home to award-winning wineries, and visitors can take a tour of some of the best and see – and taste – what they have to offer.
There’s an 18-hole golf course overlooking Dunsborough Lakes and you can view wonderful local artworks at Yallingup Galleries. To get a deeper sense of the local culture and traditions, visit the Wardan Aboriginal Centre on Injidup Springs Road, where, among other presentations, you can see the ancient Dreamtime stories told through the medium of dance.
