South Dakota is a state in the central northern region of the USA known as the Great Plains. The region is known primarily because of the iconic American landmark, Mount Rushmore near Rapid City. South Dakota is home to densely forested mountains, beautiful glacial lakes, huge plains and glorious open skies all of which is divided up into huge swathes of National Park and protected woodland areas.

The most famous landmark in South Dakota is one of America’s most iconic images; Mount Rushmore. The National Memorial is a monumental carving of four American presidents into the rock of the mountain. The giant faces are around 60 feet tall and depict four of the most important presidents in America’s history; Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln. Wind Cave National Park is one of the most spectacular and fascinating parks in South Dakota. The cave system is one of the largest and most complex in the world and there a number of guides that run tours into the caves, how far in you go is up to you and which tour you pick.

Rapid City is one of the state’s most famous and popular cities. There are plenty of attractions in and around the city such as a water park, a reptile park, museums, art galleries and a large number of lively bars and fine restaurants.

South Dakota is famed for its outdoor activities and camping. The hills and forests of the region are perfect for all manner of outdoor pursuits. There are hundreds of trails and paths ideally suited for mountain biking and trekking, as well as more mountainous regions for rock climbing and abseiling. The Missouri River runs straight through the middle of the state providing some excellent rapids and waterways, which are perfect for kayaking, canoeing and white water rafting. There are also a number of large lakes scattered all over the state which a great fro swimming and water sports.
