How do you get the cheapest tickets to Rabat ?
It’s surprising that Morocco’s capital city is not one of its more popular destinations, but when you first lay eyes on this stunning gem by the sea you’ll be glad it isn’t. On your Rabat vacation you’ll be able to explore the historical landmarks and incredible culture without the throngs of visitors that crowd the streets of Casablanca and Fez. The beautifully preserved medina will make you feel as though you’ve been transported back through time as you tour ancient palaces and haggle with vendors over their goods. The seaside promenade that winds along the shore makes Rabat particularly appealing to couples looking for a romantic retreat.
The Moroccan capital is made up of several distinct neighborhoods just like any other city. You’ll most likely be spending the majority of your Rabat vacation in the medina, or Old Town; the ancient heart of the city. This is where you’ll best be able to appreciate the many different cultures that influenced the city over the centuries, leaving their marks on the architecture, language and artwork. The historic Rue des Consuls is a great place to wander and get some shopping done; the street is lined with small vendors and craftsmen selling their wares in much the same way they did several centuries ago.
There’s something incredible waiting to be discovered around every corner on your Rabat vacation. Even if you spend most of your time wandering around down by the waterfront you won’t be bored for a minute.
There are plenty of cafes overlooking the ocean where you can spend lazy afternoons sipping mint tea and enjoying some delicious traditional Moroccan pastries. From its perch atop a cliff in the most ancient part of the city, the Kasbah offers some of the best views in Rabat. You’ll get the full impact of this 11th-century structure’s grandeur when you enter through the stunning Bab Oudaia, which was part of the city’s original defenses.
Rabat’s history stretches back way beyond the earl y Middle Ages, and one of the most fascinating and scenic places you can visit is Chellah on the outskirts of the city. An incredible mix of Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman and Almohad ruins, the site has a haunting beauty and quietness that can make for a welcome retreat from the city. You can stroll down centuries-old paths and admire the Jupiter Temple, Pool of the Nymph and the elaborate tomb of Abou al-Hassan Ali. Today the former necropolis has been converted into a garden, and also home to groves of fig, olive and orange trees, as well as numerous colorful wildflowers. Be sure to stop and see the ancient bassin des anguilles, where some women still today carry on the tradition of feeding the eels in hopes of an easy childbirth.
There are plenty of more modern diversions to enjoy on your Rabat vacation as well. The French left their mark on the city’s cuisine, and there are plenty of restaurants ranging from chic 5-stars to low-key pubs where you can enjoy a delicious meal. Many of the city’s restaurants and bars have outdoor seating and patios so you can enjoy the warm weather to the fullest.
