What to see and do in Juneau ?

Juneau’s wide expanses offer a wide array of different attractions. Downtown Juneau sits right across from Douglas Island, and features great dining and a vibrant arts scene, no doubt inspired by the magnificent scenery. Mount Juneau towers overhead, with a rich mining history that influenced much of the city’s early growth. Four nationally protected areas sit at Juneau’s doorstep, including the largest National Forest, Tongass.

Juneau is an absolute must for any lover of outdoor adventure. Alaska is home to America’s most spectacular mountain ranges, best-preserved wilderness, and some of its most beautiful plant and animal species.

The Tongass National Forest, the nation’s largest, is an incredibly beautiful rain forest, although not of the tropical variety. Lush and verdant, the forest is home to cedar, spruce, and hemlock, which provide homes for a variety of animal species. Multiple rivers flow through the forest, providing habitat for salmon and feeding grounds for bears and bald eagles. Due to its stunning beauty, and its size, the forest sees about a million guests each year.

Another popular activity is glacier touring. Glaciers are mighty rivers of ice, powerful forces that are responsible for carving up mountains and valleys all over North America. For example, Yosemite’s Half Dome used to be full, and then a glacier hit it. Juneau sits adjacent to one of the continent’s largest glacier fields, and visiting is an amazing way to spend a day, or more. You can view glaciers by hiking, biking, or even kayaking up to the base. All told, it’s a stunning experience that you can’t have in any other American capital.

Within city limits, there is a wide array of cosmopolitan attractions on offer. Alaska’s only theater company, Theatre in the Rough, calls Juneau home, and produces great plays year-round. Incredible galleries dot downtown and host a monthly First Friday Artwalk, which is a great way to explore local culture and maybe pick up a few memories to take home. In addition, events like the Alaska Folk Festival, held each April, celebrate local music, dance, food and drink, and more.
