Travel to Tangier

Sitting on the North African coast at the Strait of Gibraltar where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic is Tangier, a city that has a rich presence on the scrolls of human history. The community was initially settled around the 5th century BC and has been primarily a Phoenician community up until the era of independence that began in the 1950’s. It was often considered an international city, free of rule from a single nation, so many nations would send their spies to Tangier as an entry into the rest of Africa, Asia, or Europe. You might not be spying on someone with your planned holiday in Tangier, but there are a number of exciting exploration opportunities for you to enjoy. Let’s take a look!

The American Legation Is Just the Start of Your Journey

What is unique about the Tangier American Legation is that it has been designated an American National Historic Landmark, even though it is firmly entrenched in a Tangier medina. It’s also notable as being the first public property outside of thee United States and it is a cultural center, a research library, and a school that focuses on Arabic studies. For another taste of local culture, the Museum of Moroccan Arts and Antiquities are located in the former apartments that the Sultan used to use and you’ll find art from all over the nation featured here. Some of the more unique items include firearms that have been decorated, a collection of silk Fez, and artifacts from a number of Roman and Carthaginian sites.

Make sure to tour the surrounding palace area too! The Grand Mosque in Tangier is in the Grand Socco area and the religious significance of its location cannot be overstated. The mosque was built on the site of a Portuguese cathedral that was used prominently for a number of centuries. The cathedral was built on an ancient site that the Romans used to build a temple to Hercules. The mosque itself is over two centuries old and is available for tours when worship or prayers are not taking place.

You Can’t Stop Your Adventure Yet!

If you’ve made your way to Grand Socco, which literally means “Big Square,” then you’ll want to take some time to get the full experience. There are a number of shops that sell fruits and spices in the square and in the evening is when the markets are the most active. The smell of produce fills the air and the colors blend beautifully together from the striped foutas that many of the sellers wear. The Forbes Museum of Tangier is near the square and it was founded by Malcolm Forbes, who made his fortune in publishing. It’s used today as a residence for visiting dignitaries, but it’s a good rest stop as you continue your adventure.

You’ll also want to see the Church of Saint Andrew, which has a large belltower that’s shaped like a minaret. The interior has the beauty you’d expect from a North African religious site and the craftsmanship of the archways within the church are outstanding. Tangier is a place where worlds collide, but in a good way. If you’re ready for an exciting adventure, there may be no better city on this planet than Tangier to provide that for you! Plan your trip to explore this city today!
