Located along the border Austria’s eastern border, Nickelsdorf is an interesting, multicultural community to visit. Until 1920, it and the province of Burgenland actually belonged to Hungary.
Nickelsdorf is host of two famous, very different, music festivals. The annual and internationally famous Jazzfestival Konfrontationen has taken place since 1985. and beginning in 2005, a rock music festival began being held in the community annually. It has grown from being one of the largest festivals of its type in the country to one of the best festivals of its type in the world. Many of the world’s headlining rock acts make their way to the weekend Nova Rock Festival each year.
From Nickelsdorf, you have the option to visit the amazing Dorfmuseum Monchhof, which is about 10km away. This open-air museum is a family-friendly activity, with plenty of items on display from past generations. The entire museum is offered in German only, though the ability to walk through a typical Burgenland village is an experience everyone can enjoy.
A day trip over to the Schloss Halbturn is also a wonderful experience. It’s not the largest estate of its type that you’ll find in Austria, though it does have plenty of history to enjoy. Take a walk around the gardens, enjoy the season market, and there is even a hotel near the estate if you wish to make it an overnight trip to enjoy the local wine.
