Szombathely might not be the largest city in Hungary, but it is the oldest. Known as being the birthplace of Saint Martin of Tours, its name reflects its ancient status as a market town. When translated, the name means “Saturday Market.” During the Medieval era, a market was held every Saturday in town. Founded in 45 AD, Szombathely was close to the Amber Road and served as a provincial capital for the Roman Empire.
A shrine to Mithras was discovered in 2008, which reflected an “underground” religion that was practiced by the Romans from the 1st to the 4th centuries. Make your way over to the arboretum and you’ll find a quiet place to relax and take a casual stroll. It’s a beautiful little place with a small waterfall and plenty of blooming wildflowers in season. Just a note: the arboretum does not typically allow dogs to enter.
You’ll also want to make your way over to the Savaria Museum. This sophisticated exhibition is just off the main square and features the natural history and civilizations that have called Szombathely home over the years. This includes an exhibit that highlights a Stone Age village. In the auditorium, you’ll find apostolic statues to view and examples of local Romanesque art.
On a beautiful afternoon, it can be just as fun to sit by the fountain in the main square and enjoy the sunshine. Szombathely may be a modern industrial center, but it has deep historical roots that offer visitors a fascinating journey through time.
