Corinth is one of those ancient Greek cities to which everyone feels like they have a connection. The modern city was founded in the 19th century after an earthquake destroyed the first.

The city of Corinth is geographically located in a narrow land area, known as the Isthmus of Corinth, which connects the region of Peloponnese to the mainland of Greece. The Isthmus of Greece, which was formerly used for the transportation of ships, is nowadays cut by a canal which is used for the purposes by which the isthmus was used before, the city and region has been a site of trade and commerce since it was first settled, perhaps over 8,000 years ago.

What you’ll find in the city today is a look into the future while exploring the past. You’ll find ancient streets built more than 2,000 years ago. Corinthian columns still stand tall. Numerous statues that reflect the artistic talents of the day are found in great number at the Archeological Museum.

Next in the town’s history, another important event happened during the Mycenean period, when the Dorians tried to invade and take the control over the town. The Dorians failed the first time, but succeeded after trying again, and settled in Corinth for a while.

Then you move into the Roman era that is often described in ancient texts, including the New Testament. This period describes how Rome resettled the city to restore it to prominence, with the local church believed to have been founded by Paul. At least two books in the modern Bible are believed to have been written in Corinth.

Yet the history you can walk through in Corinth doesn’t stop there. It has seen Byzantine rule, Ottoman Rule, and eventually achieved independence through the Treaty of London in 1832. When Greece was founded a year later, it was one of the cities considered to be the new capital, though Athens was eventually chosen.

Nowadays, an important part of the old city of Corinth can not be visited anymore due to the fact that it was partially destroyed by an earthquake towards the last years of the decade of 1850. Despite of this, there still are many interesting historical spots that visitors can meet in the city and its surroundings, as well as a variety of entertaining things to do. Corinth, as well as the entire prefecture of Corinthia, is a very attractive Greek destination which combines an amazing historical past with modern life in a unique way.

Numerous monuments, such as the Temple of Apollo, the Sacred Spring, and the Castle of Acrocorinth are notable for visitors.

Corinth allows you to explore past civilizations to find answers to today’s questions. That is why it could be the perfect destination.
