Malmedy is a beautiful community in the Walloon region of Belgium. It is one of the few places where the Walloon language is still regularly used and the folklore is celebrated. Festivals are held throughout the year to continue with the traditions, including the “Cwarme,” or Carnival. Traditional costumes are worn by some all year long to celebrate the history and culture of the community.
A visit to the Malmedy Abbey is always in order during a stay here. Founded in the 7th century, it was the central figure of the city as it grew in its original days. A tour of the local historical museum traces the various periods the city has faced, including transitions into Belgium, then Germany, and then back again.
Landmarks help to tell the stories of Malmedy as well. Linger around the obelisk in the center of the city and enjoy everything that the central square offers. Make your way up the small hills outside the city to enjoy an incredible view from a summit gazebo.
Some of the stories of Malmedy are very tragic. Dozens of prisoners were executed in and around the city near the conclusion of the second world war. Friendly-fire bombings over Christmas in 1944 killed hundreds. You’ll find numerous memorials and commemorations dotted throughout the city to remember those who fought, survived, or were tragically killed. You’ll find a very active music academy, a mandolin club, and 4 brass bands performing regularly.
