Eisenstadt sits in the plains of eastern Austria at the southern foot of the Leitha Mountains. It is just 12km from the Hungarian border, providing visitors with access to a rich culture and history. A settlement was founded here around the turn of the 9th century under the reign of Charlemagne and has seen numerous royal families govern over her borders in the centuries since.
The main sight of Eisenstadt is the Castle Esterhazy, which was constructed in the late 13th century. It came into the ownership of the Esterhazy family in the early 17th century, where it would eventually be converted into a Baroque castle. Although the moats were removed in the 1800s and the defensive battlements were replaced with palace luxuries, several of the rooms allow visitors to see the artwork and furnishings that have been collected.
The castle offers a gift shop and a wine museum as well. Depending on the time of your stay, you may also be able to experience a concert in the Haydnsaal. Touring the extensive grounds of the castle is a relaxing way to spend the day as well.
