Located centrally in the Negev Desert, Beersheba began its story as a Bedouin encampment. For centuries, even when the cities of ancient Israel were thriving, the desert climates here made it difficult for any permanent settlement to survive. It wouldn’t be until the Ottoman Turks came in the early 1900s that the city would begin to modernize.
Even then, Beersheba wouldn’t really begin to grow until the end of the second world war and the conclusion of conflicts with Egypt. You’ll want to focus your time in the city on the Old Turkish Town. Here is where you’ll find Abraham’s Well, which tradition says is the location where Abraham gave his oath with Abimeleh. Be sure to tour the first pharmacy, the old mill, and the two houses of the Bedouin mares. The Negev Museum is also located in the old city, with a small art collection and rotating exhibits to tour.
A bicycle tour of the city can also be a fun experience. Try stopping at the Draw Tower, the Pyramid Synagogue, and the old cinema, built in the 1950s and the first movie theater in the Negev Desert. To the south of the city is an oasis called Neve Midbar which offers hot mineral water springs to enjoy. Then be prepared for a vibrant nightlife in the desert with several clubs and dance bars available to enjoy. Beersheba is often thought of as being outside of the normal Israel experience. Make your way here and you may discover some magic.
