Travel to Djibouti
Djibouti is a small nation that can be found on the Horn of Africa. It was historically part of the Land of Punt and the Kingdom of Aksum, located south of modern-day Eritrea. Located on some of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, the ports of Djibouti help to control access to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
This small nation experiences a climate that is very hot, arid, but humid all year long. That climate lends to the steaming effects that can be seen at Lake Abhe, which is situated on the border with Ethiopia. The lake is surrounded by limestone chimneys and the visual aesthetics are so surreal that the location has been filmed for certain movies.
You can also visit Lake Assal during a trip to Djibouti. The lake is the lowest point on the African continent and the second-lowest point on the planet, measured to be over 150m below sea level. Outside of Antarctica, it is the saltiest lake in the world. Getting there can be a rough ride, but you’ll get to see Devil’s Island and other natural landscapes along the way and that makes the investment worthwhile.
Be sure to take advantage of the coastal location while in Djibouti as well. Several reefs are located just off the coast, offering divers access to an impressive array of life. Try kayaking in the stunning waters of the Gulf of Tadjoura as well.
Djibouti is not without its challenges, but there are certain rewards that can be found with a trip to this coastal African nation. Be aware of the risks, prepare for them, and that will allow you to plan an incredible itinerary.
