What to see and do in Toowoomba ?
Toowoomba is a city that has blossomed from its origins in 1816, when a British explorer, Allan Cunningham, found a wide availability of land suitable for farming. Toowoomba became a city in 1904, having previously been a township. Today, the history lives on, in beautiful art deco buildings such as at the Empire Theatre and colonial-style architecture elsewhere
Toowoomba is stepped in the heritage of its rich history, and this is reflected in places where visitors can stay. It’s a perfect holiday combination of urban and rural sprawl, with plenty of wide open spaces, whether in famous parks such as the Japanese Garden or in the bush far outside the city where you can really relax and unwind.
There’s lots to do in Toowoomba. If upon your arrival you’re tired and worn out by travel, a good place to start is the Salt Cave. It’s not an actual cave but a room covered in Himalayan salt that’s said to have cleansing and healing properties, and is located on James Street. Relax in a comfortable chair and let the stress of getting to your holiday destination float away. Yoga sessions are also held at the Salt Cave.
Refreshed from your salt therapy – or halotherapy – session, you’re ready to take on what this interesting city has to offer.
Easterfest is on every year at, unsurprisingly, Easter time. It’s a musical festival with a difference as alcohol is not allowed. There’s a lot more than just music, however: arts and crafts, sports and entertainment also feature.
The Crows Nest Falls are a charming sight and are found in Crows Nest National Park. Besides the 25-metre-long falls, there are stunning views over a gorge called the Valley of the Diamonds. There aren’t any actual gems there, only sparkling granite rocks. You can walk along a 4.5 km trail and see all the sights in the park.
Equally well worth a visit is the Japanese Garden in Toowoomba, the biggest such traditionally designed garden in the entire country. It features a lake crisscrossed by red bridges, and thousands of species of trees and plants, from Japan and Australia.
If you’re lucky enough to be in Toowoomba in September, you’ll get to see the wonderful Carnival of Flowers. The event, the largest flower show in Australia, has been running for over six decades. It also celebrates food and wine, and there’s plenty of entertainment.
Sample some of the finest wines, olives and extra virgin olive oils in the region at the award-winning Bunnyconnellen olive grove and vineyard on Swain Road. It’s about a 45-minute drive north of the city, but well worth a visit to this 252 acre property where you can take in the views while sipping a wine of your choice.
