Travel to Eritrea

Eritrea is located on the horn of Africa, bordered by Ethiopia, Sudan, and Djibouti. It provides an extensive coastline to the Red Sea and includes several islands and archipelagos that can be fun to explore. Once held by Italy, Eritrea was awarded to Ethiopia in 1952 and remained under their rule until independence was recognized in 1993.

What makes Eritrea such an intriguing destination is its rapidly changing topographical features. One goes from the coast to the highlands, along with the archipelago environment in the north. A variety of climates accompanies these different zones, with a stay in Asmara feeling like any other Mediterranean capital.

Make sure to give yourself some time to acclimate to the higher climates that can be found in the country. Asmara is at 2600m, so a couple days of sightseeing within the city can help one adjust to the thinner air. Make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen as well.

Hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing are common activities, especially around the capital. You’ll need to bring your own equipment and have a guide along to avoid an uncomfortable outcome.

You can also explore Martyr’s National Park while staying in Asmara. Located on a highland plateau, this wildlife and forest preserve offers visitors access to some amazing views that are beyond compare with anything else Africa offers. To travel outside of the park or the capital requires a transit permit, however, so keep that in mind as you plan your stay.

Eritrea offers a unique perspective on life that can be very interesting to explore from a cultural standpoint. There are challenges to a stay in this nation, but there are many possibilities as well.
