Travel to Malawi
Tucked between Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique, the small nation of Malawi is called the “Warm Heart of Africa.” Settled by the Bantu around the 10th century, the British began to colonize the area in the late 1800s. Called Nyasaland at the time, the country gained independence in 1964 and it became a republic in 1966.
Development in Malawi is far behind the rest of the world. Most of the country is based on an agricultural economy and has a population that is mostly rural.
That setup does give the adventurer plenty of room to explore. Malawi is a land filled with plateaus, mountain summits, beautiful plains, and stunning river valleys. Some of the highest peaks in the country top 3000m. Each area has multiple activities to offer, giving this small nation a large reputation.
Some of the best freshwater diving sites can be found in Nkhata Bay. Boating and other water sports are available on Lake Malawi. There are eight different national parks that offer exploration opportunities, including Liwonde National Park, which offers visitors a unique safari expedition to enjoy.
Cultural tours are available in Malawi as well. You can find everything from pottery and cooking classes to tea factory tours available with certain packages. One common time to visit is during the Lake of Stars festival, where live music combines with warm sunshine to create an amazing beach holiday.
Malawi does have the occasional place to avoid, but a little common sense can go a long way toward creating a fun and exciting African adventure. Plan with care and this may just be the perfect holiday destination.
