Travel to Algeria
The People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria offers visitors a beautiful Mediterranean Coast to explore. It is a country that has seen numerous empires and dynasties come and go, so its approach to life is quite unique.
There are Ancient Roman streets and theaters mixed in with Middle Eastern influences with a very African flair that will make you fall in love with the culture and sights that are available.
Arabic, Berber, and French influences can be found everywhere in Algeria. Cities like Algiers offer the chance to enjoy urban culture, while communities like Sidi Bel Abbes give you an opportunity to explore what local life is all about.
As the largest country in Africa, there are significant topographical opportunities that invite exploration. The southern portion of the country is deeply embedded in the Sahara, while the maritime fronts of communities like Bejaia offer emerald waters and lush, green forests. You’ll find monoliths standing tall like the Tassili n’Ajjer, while there are opportunities to relax in nature at places like Edough National Park.
There are several UNESCO World Heritage Sites to explore in Algeria as well, including the first capital of the Hammadid Empire. Tourism only began to develop within this nation in the early 2000s, so many facilities are still relatively new and very modern.
Art and culture in Algeria is consistently vibrant and a reflection of the numerous influences that have helped to evolve this nation’s society over the centuries. It is a wonderful introduction to the African continent or the perfect place to explore if you want to see more of what the world has to offer.
Best time to travel
The climate in the northern part of Algeria is Mediterranean and so visitors can expect lots of sunshine during the summer months, and high temperatures. In other parts of the country, such as the east, temperatures are lower, while in desert regions there are extreme variations between scorching daytime temperatures and freezing nights.
Best of Algeria
Algeria is the largest country in Africa and lies on the northern part of the massive continent. The country has a coastline along the Mediterranean Sea, and with great beaches and wonderful weather it’s an ideal place for a sun holiday. The country is steeped in many centuries of history, traditions and culture, and the capital, Algiers, on the central coast, is a wonderful place to visit and explore. Desert treks can be done on Algeria holidays: take a camel train out into the Sahara and experience the majesty of this enormous expanse of sand that covers most of North Africa.
If you’re wondering where to stay on your Algeria holidays, the capital is a good starting point. You’ll get a fantastic mix of beautiful city and beachside splendour in Algiers. Oran, further west along the coast, is another great place to stay while holidaying in the country. It’s the second-biggest city in Algeria and has a long history, stretching all the way back to 903, when it was founded. Around 80km inland of the east coast is the lovely city of Constantine, the country’s third largest. Its many bridges have given it the nickname the ‘City of Bridges’ and it has significant historical sites and museums.
If you’re in Algiers you can’t miss the soaring white structure that is Maqam Echahid, which means Martyrs’ Memorial. It marks the country’s struggle for independence from French colonial rule that resulted in an armed conflict from 1954 to 1962. Maqam Echahid has three enormous and towering sections that resemble palm leaves and beneath them burns an ‘eternal flame’.
Take a trip to Notre Dame d’Afrique, or Our Lady of Africa, a beautiful basilica in Algiers that dates back to 1872. Equally striking is the location of this Roman Catholic building of part Byzantine design: on a cliff looking out over the Bay of Algiers. Near to Algiers Harbour is the Great Mosque of Algiers, and it’s much older, having been constructed in 1097.
For some nature during your Algeria holidays, head out to Gouraya National Park on the eastern coast. It has lots of beaches and a range of plant and animal life – most notably the Barbary macaque – and its centrepiece is Gouraya mountain, which rises up 660 metres above sea level.
The Museum of Antiquities in Algiers is not to be missed. It first opened to the public in 1897 and has a vast collection of items from Algeria as well as around the region.
Dine out on some succulent local cuisine. Along the coastal regions expect a lot of seafood on the menu, and all around the country there’s a profusion of fresh vegetables and fruit that are included in dishes. Couscous is a staple in many parts.
