Travel to Eswatini
Eswatini (former Swaziland) was announced by King Mswati III of Swaziland on Wednesday 18/4 2018 renaming the country Swaziland to “the Kingdom of Eswatini”. The official change was declared during celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Swazi independence. The change was unexpected but the King has been referring to Swaziland several times as Eswatini, means “land of the Swazis”.
Eswatini may be one of the smallest countries in Africa, but it is also one of the most diverse in terms of topography and climate. You’ll find arid, hot lowlands and cool mountain peaks, all waiting to be explored at your leisure. It is also one of the last absolute monarchies in the world.
Eswatini has a reputation for friendliness and you’ll encounter that hospitality from the first moment of your stay. The country contains several large game reserves and parks, many of which are sponsored by the government. Options include the Mkhaya Game Reserve, the Hlane Royal National Park, and the Malolotja Nature Reserve.
With the parks and reserves, you’ll be able to encounter a variety of wildlife. Several different mammal species can be seen, along with lions, white rhinos, elephants, and zebras. There is also a diverse array of bird life that can be spotted in all seasons.
Bonding with nature goes beyond seeing the various protected herds in eSwatini. There are several spectacular trekking venues that are worth exploring as well. Malolotja Falls are particularly impressive, but the vistas offered by Pine Valley are also ideal if you’re trying to get away from the speed of urban life.
Try to schedule your trip to Eswatini during the Incwala Kingship. This festival occurs around the Christmas season, lasts until January, and is intended to help the population gain blessings from their ancestors. eSwatini has a distinctive appeal that speaks to the traveler’s heart. You may find many trails to explore here, but only one of them as your name on it.
