Travel to Guinea-Bissau
The small coastal nation of Guinea-Bissau was once part of the Mali Empire and the Kingdom of Gabu. It has seen Portuguese influences over the years as well and each remains, despite the country gaining independence in 1973. When French Guinea was renamed, the capital was added to this country’s name to prevent confusion between the two.
When visiting Guinea-Bissau, one must make time to explore the 20+ islands that make up the archipelago of the Bijagos Islands. Visit Orango to see wild hippopotamus. Turtle nesting grounds can be found on some of the beaches. Most of the islands have fishing lodges that are owned by ex-pats.
In the southeast, you will find a combination of farms, forest, and savannah can provide an intriguing adventure as well. There is a certain remoteness to the area that has caused development to run behind other areas of the country. The Forests of Jemberem, as part of Cantanhez Natural Park, offer visitors access to this area. That makes it possible to encounter one of the largest populations of chimpanzees in Africa.
Political unrest is very common in Guinea-Bissau. Since it gained independence, the country has never seen an elected President serve out a full 5-year term. This has kept tourism levels down, but has allowed for higher levels of safety than in some neighboring nations. Vaccinations are mandatory for traveling to this destination.
Plan correctly and you may find Guinea-Bissau to be a uniquely beautiful African destination to enjoy.
