Travel to Saint Helena
Located in the southern Atlantic, almost directly between South America and Africa, Saint Helena is a tropical, volcanic island that is one of the most remote in the world today. First discovered in 1502, it was originally uninhabited. Over the years since, it has often been used as a prison or place of exile. Napoleon was imprisoned there in exile by the British.
It is an island that has numerous endemic birds, with more than 400 species having been counted. The biodiversity on the island is strong, including more than 200 different fungi.
Outside of the natural attractions, what draws people to Saint Helena is a tour of Napoleon’s imprisonment. The Longwood House is the primary site to tour, located about 6km from the capital of Jamestown. The house has become a museum that is actually owned by the French government.
While visiting the island, the Museum of Saint Helena is another stop worth considering. It is managed by the local Heritage Society and housed in the island’s old power station. Be sure to climb the hillside stairway, called “Jacob’s Ladder,” to get a good view of the capital and the shores beyond.
There is a golf course on the island to enjoy and sport fishing opportunities are abundant. With a total population of about 5,000 people in total, you’ll find that Saint Helena is a quiet, laid-back island that will let you relax and explore at your own pace. A visit is an incredible opportunity that should not be missed.
