Travel to Togo
Togo, or the Togolese Republic, is a small nation that once saw multiple tribes journey through for commerce. During the height of slavery, the region was referred to as the “Slave Coast.” Germany declared the region to be Togoland in 1884. Authority transferred to France after 1918 and the country gained independence in 1960.
Although there are some political questions about Togo, many find it to be one of the nicest destinations in Western Africa. There are white-sand beaches to enjoy, decent roads to guide you, and beautiful mountains that invite a trekking expedition.
One of the best destinations in Togo is one of the most difficult to reach. Koutammakou was designated a world heritage site in 2004 and features traditional mud tower houses, called Takienta, that are still occupied. These style of building is the national symbol of Togo.
There are a few parks available in Togo to tour as well and some offer limited safari experiences. You’ll find that region of Kpalime, with its emphasis on growing coffee, has a growing outdoor recreational structure that includes hiking trails. One can never go wrong with a stay at Lake Togo or along the ocean coast either, though it is advised to stay away from public beaches.
Sporting events are the primary form of entertainment in Togo. Football is played most weekends. Several clubs stay open at night as well. With some planning, local guide assistance, and common sense, Togo can be a wonderful destination to explore.
