Guarding the shores of southern Sicily, Agrigento was once one of the largest cities in the world. During the Golden Age of Ancient Greece, some population estimates have up to 1 million people living here as early as 400 BC. Because of this history and the overall size of the early population, the main sights of Agrigento cover a large area. Much of it is still unexcavated. What has been discovered are some incredible historical finds. Be sure to visit the famous Valley of the Temples, where 7 Greek Doric-style temples were constructed over 2,500 years ago. Some have been partially restored and are listed as a world heritage site.
Several Roman and Hellenistic sites can be found in the region as well. A cave sanctuary is near the Temple of Demeter, which hosts the Church of San Biagio. The Tomb of Theron is just outside of this area and a 1st century heroon is part of the Church of San Nicola complex just a little to the north. If you prefer, the archeological museum in the city offers several exhibits that were found in the many important sites that are in this region.
Be sure to take a walk along the Via Atenea to see panoramic views of the region with some coffee. Shopping opportunities and galleries are available along the street as well. On a warm day, be sure to try the local pecorino. Agrigento was undoubtedly beautiful in ancient times and it remains so today.
