What to see and do in Akaroa ?

Explore Akaroa village with its colonial architecture, galleries, craft stores, and cafés. Relax or take part in the many activities that are on offer or explore the dramatic outer bays and take your time to soak in the magic of this breathtaking area. There is a never ending list of events to attend throughout the year.

The Canterbury region is known for it’s warm summers and temperate winters making it the perfect destination all year round.

Akaroa is also well known for a couple of its sea life population, Flea bay is home to the largest little penguin colony on mainland New Zealand. The Akaroa waters are also home to the rarest and smallest marine dolphin in the world.

Akaroa Harbour is one of New Zealand’s most unique coastal places. It is part of the Banks Peninsula that was formed from two submerged volcanic craters. The rocky and unpredictable landscape provides an insight into what the land may have looked like over millions of years ago. There are wonderful coastal walks, and in winter the stunning Southern Alps are just two hours away providing the best snow sports New Zealand has to offer.

Akaroa also has a great variety of water sports including, sea kayaking, sail boat tours, diving and a fabulous water cruise that takes you all around the harbour and surrounds showing you the world famous dolphins, penguin colony and even a seal safari. If dry land is more your style there are cycle tours and an excellent range of walking tracks available to explore.

A great activity available every week by popular demand is the Akaroa cooking classes, with a different theme each week you can learn from some of the regions greatest chefs how to cook New Zealand and international cuisines. There are also farm tours with sheep shearing classes for those more adventurous travellers. Akaroa also has an extensive selection of museums and wineries to check out.

There is a fantastic and fresh Farmers markets held every Saturday in Fletchers Hub Park, even if you don’t want to buy anything it is a fantastic experience to see and taste the local produce. There are also a few festivals worth a visit while you are there, the Akaroa Harvest festival showcasing all the areas fantastic local produce and the Little River Summer festival which celebrates all that is special about the Little River community, this particular festival runs for six weekends packed full of amazing events including an agricultural show and a musical drum show.

The historic Giant’s House, located in Akaroa is a definite must see for those history buffs. The beautiful house is surrounded by terraced gardens dotted with a variety of sculptures and mosaics and inside you can find original and unique artworks. Visit at sunset to experience the full extent of Akaroa’s romantic evenings.
